Jake Shimabukuro will return to Maui with musician Mac McAnally for a concert at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 8 in the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Castle Theater, the MACC announced Monday.

Their concert, “Celebrating Songs and Stories on Distant Shores,” will pay tribute to the friendship between Shimabukuro and McAnally, who first performed together with the legendary Jimmy Buffett in the Coral Reefer Band. The performance will include material and collaboration from both artists in addition to select songs to honor their friend and mentor.

Shimabukuro is renowned ukulele master and singer-songwriter from Hawaii who has pushed the boundaries of the four-stringed instrument and explored a wide range of genres over the course of his two-decade career, with many calling him “the Jimi Hendrix of the ‘ukulele,” according to a MACC news release.

McAnally hails from Mississippi and rose from a teenage studio musician in Alabama to one of Nashville’s most respected singer-songwriters, the news release said. His debut album came out in 1977 and he has logged notable credits in country music, with songs cut by Alabama (“Old Flame”), Kenny Chesney (“Back Where I Come From”) and more.
